He was a nobody. Once a slave, rescued, and freed once more; he was reviled in his tribe because he refused to fight the other tribe that had enslaved him before. He was not against fighting - he was against fighting the wrong enemy. So he left, or was exiled, and faced down the threat that all others ran from. It could not be a victory of flesh - it would have to be a victory of mind.
